Blake ended the call with Sam, letting his phone drop down to his desk in a clatter. Sam Benton was becoming a burr under his saddle. The man had more questions than anyone should. Frowning, Blake looked at his computer screen. He sighed. Sam said there had been something unusual in the autopsy results. Curious, Blake logged in to see what was going on.
Through the agreements the US Marshals had with every Attorney General in the United States, they could access local records from police departments and medical examiners, as well as partners like the FBI. It didnât take long for Blake to get into Gailâs files. Heâd only met her one time, when he stopped at the county coronerâs office when the body of a dead fugitive theyâd been tracking ended up there. He had no opinion of her, other than she was the Kanawha County Medical Examiner.
Staring at the files, Blake sighed, wondering if Sam was making up the story about something unusual in the autopsies as he clicked through the pages. It sounded like something a guy like Sam Benton would do. Maybe he was trying to make himself seem more important. Blake shook his head as he paged through the results. The first couple of pages seemed pretty standard with information about Jenny and Stuartâs weight, height, and address. As he got to the third page, he stopped dead cold. At the bottom, he saw in the comments section of the report, âThe two bodies recovered together have one thing in common. They both have spent brass casings that were ejected from the murder weapon placed in their mouths prior to discovery. Upon examination, Jenny Stuart had two casings in her mouth. Stuart Clark had two. The casings have been retrieved and sent off to the lab for processing, but it is the hypothesis of this department that the casings will match the bullet fragments found in each of their bodies. Those were also sent off to the lab for processingâ¦â
Blakeâs breath caught in his throat. How is that even possible? Leaving casings in the mouths of their victims was a hallmark of the Sons of Goliath. A shudder ran through him. Every single victim left by the gang had been found with casings stuffed in their mouths; as if it was some warning that if you spoke, you got shot. Even during the interviews with the arrested gang members, Blake could never get to the bottom of why they did that. It was just their trademark. He remembered sitting in front of Leo McDaniel asking him the same question. The man just sat and smiled, revealing he was missing a few teeth. He never answered the question. Even the cops that had gotten killed by the pipe bombs the gang put together, one of them being AJ Roth, Maddie Franklinâs ex-partner, had casings in his mouth. No one had been able to figure out how that happened. In the end, it didnât matter. They were
